The Unexpected

Ron Boaden

Being a motor sport enthusiast, I was interested to read that the favourite for the recent (1994) ‘Targa Tasmania’ was robbed of victory by a stone through the radiator – just before the finish and the win went to a surprised and jubilant Andrew Miedeke from Port Macquarie.

It was reminiscent of the inaugural London–Sydney marathon when Lucien Bianchi, a clear leader, was robbed of victory one day from the finish because of an accident with a spectator’s vehicle (that wasn’t supposed to be there anyway).

It is interesting to note how often this sort of thing happens in life. Things look real rosy and then the unexpected takes a hand and peoples’ plans are turned upside down.

We have plenty of such examples in the Bible.

Abram thought that things were pretty good in Ur, when God told him to get out of his very comfortable situation and become a nomad.

Moses had settled down quite nicely in the royal court of Egypt when the mistreatment of one of his people brought a dramatic change in his position – from an influential leader to a shepherd in a foreign land.

Paul, they tell me, was in line for the job of High Priest when God got his attention on the road to Damascus and suddenly he found himself on the other side of the field. I expect that not even Paul the Apostle, in his wildest dreams, could have expected that one day, further down the track, God would give him a new revelation that would again turn his expectations upside down.

If you would like to have some insight into how Paul must have felt when he received the revelation of the ‘mystery’ that we speak of so often, imagine yourself to be a devout Jew with all of the law engraved into your very being and read with fresh eyes the books of Ephesians and Colossians.

You’ll see what I mean.
