One of the characteristics of Paul's letter to the Philippians is that of rejoicing and the readers are told to rejoice in prayer, in the gospel, in Christian fellowship, in suffering for the cause, and in the Lord.

The letter gives guidelines to the reader, offering the believer a purpose, a pattern, a prize and a provision.

Examples are brought before us of those who sacrificed self-interest: namely: Christ Himself, Timothy, Epaphroditus and Paul.

Philippians is one of the prison epistles of Paul, written from a Roman cell. We are not likely to be called to undergo the hardships that he suffered but these Studies in Philippians will uplift every believer and fill him with joy.

"Studies in Philippians" has contributions from Ian Davies, David Hickman, David Horobin, Mike Hughes, Mike Penny and Mike Titterington who have combined to give a verse by verse exposition of this Pauline epistle.

However, the limited space does not allow them to embroil the reader with a dreary dissertation on the derivation of numerous Greek words. Instead, they give an easy to read commentary which stresses the main theme of the letter - God has called us "to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ".

The Christian life is one of service. It is one with a goal to aim for - the prize or reward offered for service that is faithful. We need to work out, not work for, our salvation by practising what we have been taught in this Epistle, and the other scriptures, so that the prize will be won.

To encourage us the examples of Christ, Timothy, Epaphroditus and Paul are brought before us. These inspire us as we run the race that is set before us, and this booklet, "Studies in Philippians", also should motivate all who believe that the life we live matters to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
